Traveling with Kids: How to Make the Most of Family Vacations

Traveling with Kids: How to Make the Most of Family Vacations

As a parent, traveling with kids can be both a challenge and a joy. When the kids were very young, I'm certain that the trips were 100% for me. I would do anything to escape the day-to-day routine and get myself either on a beach or be entertained! As the kids have gotten older and are now (ahem) professional travelers, I think we've got it down to a science.

I always recommend careful planning and a bit of flexibility, so you can create unforgettable memories and experiences for your family. Here are some tips and tricks for making the most of family vacations, drawing on my own experiences traveling with my children to Cancun, Disney World, Disney Land, Legoland, Las Vegas, and many others.

Choose age-appropriate destinations and activities

When planning your family vacation, consider your children's ages and interests. For younger children, theme parks like Disney World or Legoland can be a magical experience, while older children may enjoy more adventurous activities like zip-lining or kayaking. In Cancun, we enjoyed exploring the ancient Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, swimming in cenotes, and lounging on the beach.

Plan ahead and stay organized

Create a travel itinerary with activities, meal times, and rest breaks built in. This will help keep your family on track and minimize stress. Pack a small bag with snacks, water, and essentials like sunscreen and bug spray to have on hand while out exploring. I always try to make reservations and book ahead when possible.

Involve your children in the planning process

Get your children involved in the planning process by asking them for input on activities and destinations. This helps build excitement and anticipation for the trip, and gives children a sense of ownership and investment in the experience. Even if I don't include them on the planning I do at least give them some choices on what activities we should plan.

Embrace flexibility and spontaneity

While having a plan is important, it's also important to be flexible and open to changing course if needed. Leave room in your itinerary for unexpected detours, spontaneous activities, and extra rest time. Accommodating the needs and feelings of everyone big and small is important to make sure everyone has the best time possible.

Make time for relaxation and downtime

Family vacations can be busy and overwhelming, so it's important to schedule in time for relaxation and downtime. This can be as simple as lounging by the pool or taking a leisurely stroll through a new city. I use the 60/40 rule and depending on the location I try to make sure that we're relaxing for at least 40% of our vacation. Running around the whole time is fun but it can take its toll.

Traveling with kids can be challenging, but with the right preparation and mindset, it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience. By choosing age-appropriate destinations and activities, staying organized and flexible, involving your children in the planning process, and making time for relaxation and downtime, you can create unforgettable memories and experiences for your family. Where are some of the unforgettable places you've been with your kids?
